Food Banker Spotlight – David Long, Greater Vancouver Food Bank

We are always interested in hearing more about the individuals in food banking across Canada! This month, our spotlight is on David Long from Greater Vancouver Food Bank in Burnaby, BC.

What is your role in food banking?
Greater Vancouver Food Bank CEO.

Describe a typical day in one word.
Humbling.

What was your inspiration to get involved in food banking?
I am at a time in my life that I want to help and I know that I can have a positive impact.

What is your greatest achievement in your current role?
Moving our 40,000 sq. ft. offices and warehouse to our new home on Winston Street in Burnaby.

What is the greatest challenge in your current role?
Telling our story and showing people what the “real” modern food bank looks like.

If you could have one wish granted that would address hunger in Canada, what would it be?
No more food waste. We do not have a shortage of food, we have a distribution problem.

What talent would you most like to have?
Patience for stupid people.

If you could tell your younger self some advice, what would it be?
Don’t worry, no one really knows what they’re doing.

Who are your heroes? Fictional or real life.
Winston Churchill, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Deadpool.

What is your idea of happiness?
Time with my wife and daughters with nothing to do but just hang out.

What is your motto?
What you permit, you promote.

What’s something quirky about you that others may not expect or know?
I have my restricted and non-restricted firearms license and I own the same handgun as “007”, the Walther PPK 9mm. I’m a good shot at the gun range – especially with the zombie targets!

What’s your theme song?
“Learn to Fly” by Foo Fighters.
