AREAS OF FOCUS

Canada is facing a food insecurity crisis.

Food Banks Canada works to improve access to nutritious food for people in need across Canada. Through our expertise we strengthen local food banks, provide leadership to the network and advocate for policy changes to address the root causes of the issue.

We also increase Canada’s food supply, by acquiring donations of food from retailers, farmers, wholesalers and more, at every stage of the supply chain.

Our
Vision

A Canada where no one goes hungry

Our
Mission

To relieve hunger today and prevent hunger tomorrow

Our
Goal

A 50% reduction in food insecurity in Canada, by 2030

How we’ll get there

Even in a country as wealthy as Canada, the situation is dire. Skyrocketing costs and, dwindling food donations have widened the gap between what people need and what food banks can provide.

We’ll keep working until:

  1. 1

Governments have implemented policies to significantly reduce food insecurity in Canada

  2. 2

Food banks and community organizations have a stable and reliable supply of nutritious food

  3. 3

Northern communities have sustainable access to nutrition

  4. 4

The food banking system is resilient and responsive to fluctuations in demand

  5. 5

Vulnerable people in every community in Canada have access to the nutrition they need

Collaborating With Our Partners

Our work to deliver concrete benefits to food banks, and the people who visit them is based on collaboration with food bankers, policy makers, clients, community partners and donors. Here’s how we make it all happen.

Priority 1: Leading and Mobilizing for Change

We’re working to mobilize the collective power of the food bank network, our partners, the public and governments to address the root causes of food insecurity.

Objectives

  1. Align the food bank network around a shared vision and coordinated action
  2. Amplify advocacy efforts to positively influence public perception and policy decisions
  3. Engage volunteers, clients, business leaders and the public to take collective action
  4. Advance policies and reforms to address immediate and long-term challenges

Priority 2: Strengthening the Food Bank Network to Meet Demand

To ensure no one is ever turned away at a food bank, we’re working toward a resilient food bank system that can serve all people in need across Canada.

Objectives

  1. An efficient and adaptable food bank system that meets immediate and long-term needs
  2. Strengthen the network to ensure a reliable supply of nutritious food reaches food banks
  3. Identify vulnerable organizations to ensure everyone has continued access to food support
  4. Invest in processes and collaboration to maximize food acquisition and distribution

Priority 3: Improving Access Where It’s Needed Most

We’re helping find community-led solutions to ensure sustainable access to nutritious food for underserved communities across Canada, including the North.

Objectives

  1. Support community-led food security and food sovereignty projects, tailored to local need
  2. Identify underserved communities and strategically invest in local solutions
  3. Work with Northern and underserved communities to find lasting local solutions
  4. Embed reconciliation in our work, by building trust and centering Indigenous voices

Tracking our progress

To measure our progress, we track the following:

  1. 1

Improvements in the poverty report card ratings

  2. 2

The ability of affiliated food banks to meet demand. Target: 80% by 2030

  3. 3

The percentage of base food needs provided through our direct or sponsored programs. Target: 25% by 2030

  4. 4

Investments in Northern Communities. Target: $30M invested in at least 5 long-term projects by 2030
