Food Banker Spotlight – Wanda Hillier, Community Food Sharing Association

We are always interested in hearing more about the individuals in food banking across Canada! This month, our spotlight is on Wanda Hillier from Community Food Sharing Association in St. John’s, NL.

What is your role in food banking?
I’m a volunteer board member for the Community Food Sharing Association here in Newfoundland and Labrador.

What was your inspiration to get involved in food banking?
I grew up in a home where you gave time back to your community. So when the opportunity to get involved presented itself, I jumped in!

The greatest achievement must be knowing you are making a difference for your community.

What is the greatest challenge in your current role?
That demand continues to rise in Canada for food bank usage.

If you could have one wish granted that would address hunger in Canada what would it be?
No-cost breakfast and lunch programs in ALL schools.

If you could tell your younger self advice, what would it be?
Don’t sweat the small stuff!

Who are your heroes? Fictional or real life
My parents and Abraham Lincoln.

What is your idea of happiness?
Time with family and friends.

What is your motto?
Suck it up, buttercup!

Something quirky about you that others may not expect or know?
I’m a big game hunter.
